Kate Bush, "Director's Cut"
The album, Director's Cut, is actually a reworking of songs from two of her previous albums, The Sensual World and The Red Shoes. Few (if any) Kate fans expected this: she's known for pitching herself forward from album to album, pausing only rarely - during promotional interviews, for example - to reflect on her last one.
Still, I'm one happy clam. I also can't help but feel an emotional connection to the idea of this record. These last three months, I've spent a good deal of time reflecting on my own past. As Mark Doty observes, the past is not static; it changes based on new images of the future that play across its mirrored surface. I have no idea what Director's Cut will sound like, but I can't imagine a more fitting soundtrack to underscore my own reflections on a changing past and future.
